The Security Department -- Everything that you need to know
Security
Starfleet Security is responsible for security aboard all Starfleet and some Federation outposts, starships, and facilities. In this function, they act in ways analogous to local and regional police agencies, but Security's mandate extends much farther than that.
Security is responsible for maintaining and enforcing Starfleet Security regulations, procedures and policies on all Starfleet and affiliated facilities, outposts, and vessels. In addition, Security is responsible for security clearances of all Starfleet/UFP personnel. Security, in close cooperation with Starfleet Intelligence, is responsible for counter-intelligence operations.
Aboard Starfleet-run facilities and vessels, Security was one of the most important divisions in the 23rd and 24th centuries, combining the armory and MACO functions of the 22nd century. Security personnel served functions both defensive and offensive, ranging from security patrols on board a starship, to guarding prisoners, to firing the ship's weapons, to providing protection during landing party/away team missions, and more. In the 24th century the officer in charge of security on a starship was given the title of Security Chief.
Security Personnel
usually rise thru the ranks by the acquisition of Ratings that are tested in service. To be eligible for Promotion, one must first qualify with the requirements of the Rating, then successfully utilize them on duty and approved by the Chief of Security and signed off by the Commanding Officer of the ship.
Enlisted Personnel usually come into service trained with Brig Duty Rating and Guard Duty Rating and are immediately indoctrinated into Patrol Rating.
Armory Rating
both from dropship (Shuttles) and transport for armed conflict both shipboard and planetside. Rating on all man operated weapons and equipment is a requirement of this rating.
Qualified Armory Rated Personnel are rated on Phaser and Torpedo Ordnance Rating. Ordnance Rating includes rating on all shipboard and heavy weaponry/equipment.
Qualified Ordance Offiers may then rate as Bridge Tactical Officers. Tactical Officers are rated on all of the various tactical maneuvers of starships.
Qualified Patrol Rated Personnel may also qualify for Investigations Rating, similar to police detective work including forensics
and interrogation. Usually this is reserved for commissioned officers or chief petty officer.
Qualified Armory Rated Personnel may also qualify for Intelligence/CounterIntelligence Rating. Usually this is reserved for
commissioned officers or chief petty officer.
Many Security Personnel, particularly as enlisted personnel, cross-rate between departments, being qualified to act as transporter operators, medics, med-techs, shuttle pilots, communications, navigators, engineering and even yeoman. Security is the
department that most recruits its commissioned officers from the enlisted ranks.

emergency during the "night", but then it will be red or yellow alert and senior shifts will also be active. This often makes Delta Shift appear as mere background, rarely seen or noticed, that strange bump in the Jeffries Tube at night, etc. Three shifts down from Senior Staff, they are often nearly anonymous. Rumors speculate that sometimes crew are assigned to this shift to keep them out of way of Senior Staff for whatever reason. Said crewmen are
sometimes jokingly referred to as omega shift crewmen.
